- Abington – Health Screenings
Walk-In health screening for Blood Pressure, Sugar Testing, Nutrition, Weight Counseling and Medication Instruction are held at Abington Senior Center on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month, 10:00 to 12:00 Noon. The Board of Health states the nurse will be available to all Abington residents, regardless of age.
- Abington – Hearing Screenings and Hearing Aid Checks
Free hearing screenings and hearing aid checks are held at 1:00 PM on the first Tuesday of each month at
the Abington Senior Center. Call the Senior Center for an appointment at 781-982-2145.
- Abington – Meals on Wheels
Abington Meals on Wheels delivered to homebound seniors at lunchtime Monday – Friday for $3.00
per meal. Volunteers deliver nutritious meals right to your kitchen table. Although anyone can apply for this service, approval must be given by the recipient’s doctor. In winter months, when Abington Schools are canceled, there will be no meals delivered. For more information contact the Abington COA at (781) 982-2145.
- Abington – Senior Activities and Programs
The Abington COA hosts many senior activities and programs including Bingo, Cribbage, Quilting, Knitting, Computer Class, Chair Yoga, Tai Chi, Line Dancing and Gym. For more information contact the Abington COA at (781) 982-2145.
- Abington – Senior Lunches
Meals are also provided at the Senior Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30 AM. The Tuesday meal is both cooked and hosted by the Friends of Abington Seniors for a cost of $4.00. The Thursday meal is hosted by the Abington Schools for $3.00. Mingling starts at 11:00 AM and Buffet lunch begins 11:30 AM sharp. Call Abington COA at (781) 982-2145 by Friday to reserve for next week’s luncheon.
- Abington – Senior Transportation
The Abington COA, van as well as the BAT (Brockton Area Transport) van, provides local transportation at $3.00 round-trip. Pickup and drop off for Doctor’s appointments as well as food and pharmacy shopping in Abington. Fridays the van goes on a local mall trip. Appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance during the week. Contact the Abington COA at (781) 982-2145.
There are Abington resident volunteers that drive seniors to medical appointments that cannot be accommodated by the Abington COA van service. Please contact the Abington COA well in advance if there is a specific need.
- Abington – Senior Transportation – BAT
Brockton Area Transport (BAT) serves the elderly and disabled population in Brockton, Abington, Avon, Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, East Bridgewater, Stoughton, Whitman and parts of Easton, Hanson and Rockland. BAT operates a fleet of modern mini-buses, that are specifically designed for the elderly and disabled, with wide doors, high roofs, low enclosed steps, and comfortable climate controlled ride. You can use BAT to go shopping, to the doctor, and visit friends anywhere within the City of Brockton as well as limited service in Easton, Stoughton, Abington, Whitman, and Avon traveling within 3/4 of a mile of the regular scheduled fixed route bus. To arrange a trip call BAT before 4:00 p.m., at least one day in advance or contact the Abington Council on Aging (COA) for for trip reservation. Times may vary. If you are 65 or older the fare is $3:00 each way within the same community and $4:00 from one Dial-A-Bat community to another.
- Avon – Blood Pressure Clinic
The Avon Council on Aging offers a Blood Pressure Clinic on the 3rd Thursday of every month. For more information call 508-559-0060.
- Avon – Caregiver Support Group
The Avon Council on Aging offers a support group for caregivers of a loved one with memory loss on the 1st Thursday every month at 6:00 P.M. For more information call 508-559-0060.
- Avon – Council on Aging
The Avon Council on Aging is charged with recognizing and understanding the interests, needs and concerns of the town senior citizens. It is the COA's commitment to develop, design, and implement programs, as well as educate the community about aging in place. The COA primarily provides information, referrals for services, and support to ensure dignity and independence of residents 60 and over and their care partners living in the community. The COA endeavors to maximize the quality of life and help our seniors live safely and in good health with socialization at its core.
